THE MAN BEHIND REGRET: IS IT THE GEAR? IS IT NOT?
The internet sure is a blessing or a curse depending on how one utilizes it. But today I speak of its benefit to me and others in the film making world. I recently met a fellow filmmaker and a very talented one. He had seen some of my work and decided to contact me, sent me a link to his work and also a friend request on the social media so we can contact more easier. I decided to check some of his work on Youtube and well the guy is talented. He's name is Turan Muralov.
So today I'll be talking a little about him and two of his life-changing short films. First of all, he isn't from film school or any media college, he's actually a recent high school graduate. While chatting with him he even told me that 2 years ago he knew nothing at all about film making. At first he bought a camera having the dream to be a professional photographer and later started performing in music. But he realized that something was missing in his work and that was videos for the music. Sometime later when he had started filming, some people contacted him wanting him to film for them for a certain amount of money. This was his first break through in the film making world.
In 2013 he found out about a computer based project competition which also had film making as one of its categories. He made a short film 'The Aim' for the competition. A motivational short film about how success in both education and life has nothing to do with how wealthy one is but how much devotion one puts in what he/she is striving for. This short film won him a 'bronze medal' for the competition.
Not giving up, Turan decides to make another short film for the same competition this year. This time he shoots and directs a heart touching film 'Regret'. Using stories and concepts we are familiarized with and turning them into short film that would later win him a 'golden medal' in the competition. Turan has shown us that time isn't our competitor, we are. Our fears are what lead us to failure. In two years he turns a dream into reality. In one year he excels from bronze to gold. He shows us that nothing is impossible once we devote our time and effort to it.
His Gear
One might think that the man behind this fulfillment holds some pretty expensive gear. But I assure you not. Well, Turan owns a Canon 550D with the kit 18-55mm and 50mm 1.8 lenses, a tripod and guessing from his films a slider, which might add up to around 1000$ (quite cheap in the film industry). Using what he had, talent and devotion he was able to pull of some great stuff. He is surely an inspiration that huge and expensive gear isn't the reason behind creativity, talent and the right knowledge is.
Hardships
Well everything has its hardships in one way or another. While talking to Turan he told he had faced challenges whilst directing his short film 'Regret'. At first it was finding the right actors to play the family role in the film and second was in directing the actors. But the challenges he faced strengthened his bond towards his film making passion and he is convinced that he wants to pursue his dream. He is now applying for film school so he can nurture his talent into professionalism.
Well, we wish Turan all the best on the way to his career and I thank him for contacting me and letting me post some of his information in my blog. I await to see his later works in the future, God willing.
ETHICS: I'm not a film reviewer or critic. I post some of the inspiring works so other filmmakers might learn from them. For this post as well, Turan didn't ask me to post his works but he granted me the permission to do so after requesting him. I believe sharing is caring and I want to share the inspiration.
